MicroMgmt Newsletter #11: The Power of Collaboration – Lessons from Charli XCX, Lorde, and Brat Summer

Heyyy micromgmt fam 😚

We’ve officially made it to Newsletter #11, and today, we’re diving deep into something that’s been blowing up in the music and influencer world—collaboration.

With Brat Summer now feeling so far away I am reminiscing! Charli XCX didn’t just drop an album—she created an entire movement. The buzz on social media was undeniable, and her unapologetic, bold energy resonated with so many. But perhaps the most talked-about moment? Her unexpected remix collaboration with Lorde. Two powerhouse artists, both known for their alternative, rebellious vibes, coming together to “work it out” musically. This wasn’t just a pop culture moment—it’s a perfect reflection of something we can all learn from in the influencer world: Collaboration is key.

The Remix We Didn’t Know We Needed

If you’ve been following Brat Summer, you’ll know it was more than just an album release—it was a perfectly crafted marketing campaign. Charli XCX created a whole vibe around the era with her signature neon green colour, a viral TikTok dance, and the unmistakable “Brat Summer” feeling. It wasn’t just music—it was a lifestyle, and her fans were living for it. This is a powerful reminder of how marketing yourself and what you stand for can create an emotional connection with your audience and help things grow.

Charli didn’t stop there. Her remix collaboration with Lorde sent shockwaves through social media. Both artists, often viewed as competitors in the pop space, showed that there’s room for everyone to thrive. By teaming up, they flipped the narrative of competition into one of empowerment. It’s not about who’s "better"—it’s about how much further you can go together.

What We Can Learn From Brat Summer

So, what can we, as micro-influencers and UGC creators, learn from Charli’s Brat Summer campaign?

  1. Branding is everything: Charli created a visual identity with neon green and an unforgettable “Brat Summer” feeling. For influencers, it’s crucial to find your version of neon green—what visual or emotional cue makes you instantly recognisable to your audience? This could be your editing style, colour palette, or even a catchphrase you use.

  2. Utilise TikTok culture: The Brat Summer TikTok dance went viral, bringing Charli’s audience together. As influencers, we can leverage trends or create our own to build momentum and get people involved in our content. TikTok has a way of turning moments into movements—jump on that wave.

  3. Emotion over product: The real genius behind Brat Summer was that it wasn’t just about the music, it was about the feeling. Charli crafted a vibe that her audience wanted to be part of. For creators, this shows the importance of selling more than just a product or service—sell the emotion, the lifestyle, the experience.

  4. Collaboration over competition: Charli and Lorde’s collab taught us all a lesson in how much power there is in working together. There’s no need to pit yourself against other creators. When you collaborate, you bring your audiences together, creating more growth for everyone involved.

How MicroMgmt Fits Into All This

At MicroMgmt, we’re all about building each other up and learning how to grow collectively. Just like Charli and Lorde, we don’t see anyone as competition. Instead, we believe in lifting each other up, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities. The influencer space is vast, and there's room for every voice, every style, and every creator.

Here’s how you can apply these lessons to your content strategy:

  • Find your “neon green”: What makes your content stand out? Whether it’s a visual style, your energy, or the way you engage with your audience, make it recognisable.

  • Collaborate, don’t compete: Reach out to other creators. Team up on content, share each other’s work, and open doors for mutual growth.

  • Create a movement: Don’t just post—bring people into your world. Whether it’s starting a hashtag, a trend, or a new style of content, make your audience feel like they’re part of something bigger.
